At Greenhill Lodge we only stock Hawke’s Bay wines on our wine list, the only region in New Zealand where this is possible to present such an extensive selection of red and white varietals of premium quality.
One of the prominent wineries we proudly stock on our wine list is Clearview Estate, and hope that you enjoy this feature from Tim Turvey, the winemaker and co-owner of Clearview Estate, on the 2013 vintage and some very special offers from the vineyard.
194 Clifton Road, Te Awanga, Hastings, Hawke’s Bay 4172
The Clearview Estate property was purchased in 1987 and CLEARVIEW ESTATE WINERY LTD was established with our first red wine from the vintage of 1989.
This historic property was first planted in grapes by Anthony Joseph Vidal as ‘Vidals No 2’, in 1916. He also planted the olive tree, now some 90 years old, which features in the ‘old olive block’ vineyard.
Helma van den Berg and Tim Turvey established the winery in 1989 and Clearview Estate continues as a family owned and operated business – handcrafted wines are grown, produced and bottled onsite. We are renowned for award winning Chardonnays and full bodied red wines. Wines from Clearview have a considerable reputation, with high quality handmade wines since the first release in 1989 of our Cabernet Sauvignon. The early Reserve Chardonnays from 1993 and 1994 won top white wine trophies at the Royal Easter Show. We built a dedicated winery in time for the 2000 vintage and extended it in 2004.
Winemakers Barry Riwai, Jordi Pena and Tim Turvey have been busy in February tasting and blending 2012/13 reds and whites in an effort to clear the tanks in readiness for the 2014 vintage. The 2013 vintage being lauded as the vintage of the century has meant there’s no hardship in this task, and we are passionately excited at what is to come.
The vintage this year has seen heat and some rain, which has put the vines two weeks ahead of any time we know. We are busy netting the grapes against birds and leafing plucking ahead of another great vintage, which we estimate will start around mid-March.
A relaxed and welcoming space greets you in our Cellar Door which first opened in 1989. You’ll be invited to sample our wines and share in our hands-on wine knowledge. We’ll send you on your way with some of our superb wines along with a cheeky tale or two.
With a personality to match the wines, our rustic cellar door has matured well from its original days as a Hastings Ford Motors garage. With the addition of lovingly restored reclaimed native timbers from the Napier railway locomotive’s sheds, rustic red bricks and fondly collected memorabilia, our cellar door has grown into what it is today, a renowned and well established hospitality veteran. With views of the ocean and the estate vineyards this is a chance to experience the whole ‘vine to wine’ process in one place.
We have built up an enviable reputation for our chardonnays and also our full bodies red blends. Our Reserve Chardonnay is a consistent gold medal winner and has won over 50 gold medals, trophies or five star ratings in less than 25 years. The latest addition to our stable of chardonnay champions is the Vineyard Selection Chardonnay. This is an elegant and restrained Chardonnay, extolling the virtues of Clearview’s unique terrior. Rich and full with a lovely crisp finish, wine critic Bob Campbell recently awarded it 94 points out of 100!
