Hawke's Bay Wineries

Hawke’s Bay is celebrated around the world for the stunning new world wines grown here in this unique environment. This region is New Zealand’s second largest wine producing area (with almost 5,000 hectares planted) and its oldest.

Known for elegant red wines, Hawke’s Bay winemakers don’t limit their focus. As well as growing over 80% of the country’s plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes, this is also a hotspot for rich, textured Chardonnay which responds well to the warm temperatures, and a continually evolving collection of further varieties including Viognier, Pinot Gris, Semillon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and others. Many wineries also produce delicious examples of New Zealand’s famous Sauvignon Blanc, in a softer, more tropical style than our southern neighbours in Marlborough.

The Hawke’s Bay wine region is made up of several sub-regions which specialise in specific wine styles and varieties due to their particular microclimates and terroir. We recommend you spend time exploring the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District, close to Greenhill Lodge for a start. Follow this with a short journey to take in the scenic wineries and vineyards of Havelock North and Te Awanga. Then continue your oenological education through Taradale, the Esk Valley and the Dartmoor Valley.

Of course, we’re happy to offer our personal recommendations for your wine adventure. You can learn more about the local wine industry here.
